A gray-haired man was standing beside a truck parked on the side of the road in Pune. It looked like he had just come to deliver something by truck. When I looked into the back of the truck to see what he was carrying, I saw that it was filled with bananas. I asked the man, whose eyelashes were also conspicuously white, if I could take his picture, and he gladly gave me permission. He smiled shyly at me in front of the camera.
The bananas on the back of the truck were all still green, not ripe enough to turn yellow, so they looked like they still needed to ripen before they would taste good. India is the world's largest banana-producing country. The bananas on the back of the truck must have all been produced in India. Even if both the production and consumption areas are within India, bananas are harvested while still green and then ripened during distribution. Indeed, the bananas I saw at the banana auction in Kolkata were all green.
