Even when referring to the same thing, the image varies considerably depending on the word used. For example, the word "chokki" conjures up images of woolen knitted garments worn by old men, while the word "vest" can be worn by young men without any sense of discomfort. These two words refer to the same thing in Japan. It is difficult to get rid of the image attached to the word itself.
A father and son were sitting in front of a shuttered store. The young boy is wearing a chokki. No, he's not an old man, so I guess I should call him a vest. I'm not sure. In any case, the boy was wearing a short, sleeveless bodysuit that covered his chest, stomach, and back.
When I pointed the camera at the little boy, he tilted his head and looked at my camera. He seemed to be striking a slightly pretentious pose. Looking at his slightly adult attitude, I felt that in this case, it would be more appropriate to call it a vest rather than a chokki.
