Although there seemed to be an event taking place on the far shore of the equinox, the congregation was probably gathered in a building somewhere, and the area in front of the Konpon-Chudo Hall was calm and relaxing. Occasionally, visitors would appear, pay their respects, and then leave. Kanei-ji Temple is a Tendai sect temple founded by the third Shogun Iemitsu. Its official name is Toeizan Kanei-ji Temple. While Hieizan protects the demon's gate of Kyoto, Toeizan was named after the demon's gate of Edo (Tokyo).
Demon's gate refers to the northeast direction, which in Yin-Yang Tao is the direction from which demons enter and leave the city. In Edo (Tokyo), Kanei-ji Temple is located in the "demon's gate" to protect the town, and Zojoji Temple is located in the "back demon's gate," which is equally abhorred as the demon's gate. Kan'eiji Temple, which boasted of its power as a prayer hall and family temple of the Shoguns, had most of its vast precincts confiscated by the new government after the Meiji Restoration, and the temple was turned into Ueno Park and the National Museum. Kanei-ji Temple is now a small temple with a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere in its precincts.
