I was walking through the center of Yangon. There were many pedestrians on the sidewalks, and many street vendors had opened their shops to take advantage of them. The girl in this photo was helping her father who was selling sundries by the wayside. When I pointed the camera at her, she gave me a cheery smile.
As I travel around Asia, I often see children like this girl helping their parents with their business. And I'm not sure what this helping out in the family business has to do with child labor. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has resolved at its first general assembly to ban the employment of children under the age of 14, but what happens in cases like this child's? If they are properly enrolled in school and are not busy working, does that not apply to them?
