In a small fishing village not far from Mumbai’s Gateway of India, a group of men played cricket in an open square. In India, cricket isn’t just a sport—it’s a national obsession. The country boasts a thriving professional league, where superstar players earn billions of yen annually. In sheer financial scale, Indian cricket surpasses even Japan’s professional baseball. With a population of 1.4 billion, it’s no surprise that becoming a national cricket icon comes with staggering wealth.
But the cricket played in this fishing village was far removed from that glamorous world. The makeshift field sat right beside the sea, where a well-struck ball could easily disappear into the waves. Yet, the players didn’t seem to mind. Laughing and cheering, they swung their bats with unbridled joy, playing not for fame or fortune, but for the sheer love of the game.
