Walking through the alleys of a residential area in the center of Ho Chi Minh City, I did not see many locals. The alleys were quiet. It was sweltering hot, and most people seemed to be staying inside their houses. I walked along the deserted alley alone and silently.
As I did so, I felt the presence of people. I saw evidence of people relaxing. A man's arm was sticking out from between the bars of an elaborately shaped window with a star and a circle. And there was a cigarette between his fingers. The man was relaxing on the windowsill, smoking a cigarette.
The house seemed to be quiet, there was no sound of TV, no sound of life, no sound of anything. Only the wispy smoke from the cigarette drifted into the alley, giving the impression that someone was there.
