Away from the old quarter which was designated a World Heritage Site, I walked around the streets in the new city. As contrasted with the old city, the downtown was bustling. And many people came and went the streets. When I walked among the crowd, I found a big statue at the end of the street. It was a Buddha statue.
The place was not a part of the precinct. Nevertheless, the statue stood majestically in a corner of the street. It wore a Kasaya and raised its right hand while it closed its eyes. Apart from India which is a big neighbor of this country, Buddhism is a most major religion in Sri Lanka. About 65% of its population believes in Buddhism.
