Boudhanath in Kathmandu is a sacred site for Tibetan Buddhism. A huge stupa stands at the center of the temple grounds, and pilgrims who visit the temple walk around the stupa in a clockwise direction. Clockwise is the Buddhist convention, and no one goes counterclockwise. The reason for the clockwise direction is said to be to imitate the movement of the sun.
I stopped close to the stupa and watched the pilgrims as they turned to pray. After a while, a woman with a parasol appeared. Even though she was wearing a parasol, she was also a pilgrim. Of course, she was walking clockwise around the chedi.
By the way, they also rotate the prayer wheel clockwise.
