The man dressed in a crisp white uniform, wearing a perfectly positioned white hat, was the doorman of the venerable Queen’s Hotel in Kandy, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka. The building itself, constructed in the colonial era, carries multiple layers of time upon its walls. Pigeons fluttered between its stone pillars, and from beyond the doorway drifted a faint mix of cool air-conditioning and the aroma of curry. As the symbolic “face” of this historic hotel, the doorman stood there with the calm, rooted presence of a tree that had grown in the same spot for decades.
He was a cheerful man. He greeted everyone with a steady, unforced smile—hotel guests, passersby, or wandering travelers like me, all the same. I wasn’t staying at the hotel, of course, yet he still swung the heavy door open for me with an effortless motion. Perhaps it was hotel policy, or perhaps it was his personal philosophy, but nothing about that smile felt scripted. It was a natural, warm expression—like a pearl polished by the Sri Lankan sun.
When I asked if I could take his photograph, he tilted his head slightly, then let his smile deepen. Facing the camera directly, his expression held a mix of pride and modesty. For him, this Queen’s Hotel uniform might not be just clothing—it might be a part of his life itself. With every door he opens, his smile seems to soften the very air of this city.
