It didn't take long to realize that I was an anomaly. Here in Rangpur, a dusty, sprawling town nestled in the northwestern reaches of Bangladesh, the concept of a tourist seems almost mythical. Walking these streets, I have yet to cross paths with a single fellow traveler. In a nation where humanity thrives in some of the highest densities on earth, where crowds swell and eddy in every conceivable corner, a solitary outsider doesn't just stand out—he cleaves the scenery. To the locals, I am an arresting curiosity. They do not look away; they stare with an unabashed, earnest wonder, their voices calling out to me without a trace of hesitation.
The man in the photograph was one of them. Drawn by that same restless curiosity, he had drifted over to striking up a conversation. When I turned to face him, I was instantly arrested by his eyes—striking, sharply upturned, and fixed upon me with an intense, unwavering gaze as I raised my camera. While Bangladesh is predominantly Bengali, this region sits precariously close to the Indian border, a historical crossroads where different bloodlines have mingled for centuries. It should not have surprised me, then, to find a countenance that felt subtly familiar, bearing features that whispered of East Asia.
Peer through the viewfinder, I allowed myself a closer study of this familiar yet foreign face. My lens caught the faded shirt clinging to his frame, patterned with a bizarre, enigmatic print. They resembled scallops, perhaps, or some esoteric geometric motif. Its true origin was impossible to discern. I found myself wondering if he even knew what the pattern meant, or if it mattered at all. More than likely, the garment had simply drifted down the global slipstream of secondhand clothing, landing in this dusty corner of the world where he had thrown it on simply because it was there.
