Bali is an island 1.6 km east of Java, Indonesia. The majority of the population is Balinese, who speak Balinese. Coral reefs and the rough seas caused by this monsoon have made maritime traffic difficult and contributed to Bali's historical development on a relatively isolated path from the outside world. Although Bali is the only region in Indonesia with the Hindu religion, it is difficult to determine when Hinduism began to influence the underlying culture unique to Bali.
