In addition to food and drink stalls, many people were doing business on the streets of Yangon. The man in the photo was one of those doing something other than eating and drinking. He was sewing with a sewing machine on the side of the road. Sewing with a sewing machine like this man is often seen in Yangon. Light industrial work seems to be in full swing in Myanmar. Since the democratization of Myanmar, various countries, including Japan, have invested in Myanmar. With that money, the country is developing at breakneck speed. Hopefully, this kind of light industry will also be the foundation for the coming heavy industry-oriented country. It will be interesting to see if the country can successfully overcome the trap of middle-income countries.

When I look at people using sewing machines in the city, I notice that most of them are not using electric sewing machines, but foot-pedal type sewing machines. The sewing machines themselves are often old. They seem to take good care of their machines and continue to use them with care. The sewing machine used by the man in the photo was also old and shining black. Myanmar, which has just begun to develop, may not be able to supply enough electricity to run all the sewing machines in the country.
