When I tell people that I love to travel abroad, they often assume that I am fluent in English. But unfortunately, I'm not that good. At best, I can speak only English for traveling. Many people seem to think that you need to be able to speak English to travel, but that's not true.

It is true that English is the language that is most likely to understand outside Japan. There is a lot of information written in English. But few locals can speak English unless they are educated in English or use it at work. Some tourists who only visit tourist attractions think that all foreigners are fluent in English, but they are wrong; they can speak it only because they are dealing with foreigners at work.

It was the same here in Jakarta. English is understood at tourist attractions and restaurants have English menus. But once you get lost in a residential area, English doesn't matter.

The man in this photo was not particularly fluent in English either. I don't speak Indonesian, and he doesn't understand Japanese. These two men, who could not communicate with the mother language, were facing each other through the lens. Even if you don't understand the language, you can still communicate.
